Wild Bird Wednesday 21 - House Crow

Crows and ravens are such great birds to watch - I think its clear that they are more intelligent than the average bird - and a good number of politicians if the truth be told!

Somewhat predictably these birds are from Oman - and they are House Crows - Corvus splendens.  They are about 40 cm long and they are pretty common wherever they occur.  On both early morning and evening strolls along the beach they were my constant companions.

As with many of the birds I saw in Oman this was a lifer.

There may be a delay in my replies this week due to end of school year musical events, ballet rehearsals and all that kind of thing.  Oh, and Christmas is approaching as well!

But don't let my hectic lifestyle put you off!  Click on the link below to join in and don't forget to visit as many WBWers as possible and to encourage new bloggers to join in.

  5. Corvids indeed are fun to watch. I get 4 or 5 species over the garden each day. In windy conditions it gets even better with the aerial displays.

Intresting to see the size of the beak on these fellas.... Raven like, or even bigger

  6. No doubt you are correct about them being more intelligent than the average politician. :))

Crows in my neighbourhood are jet black so what a surprise to see that some are coloured differently. :)

  7. I do LOVE crows and feel that they are under appreciated - as are Robins here in the US :)

  8. Very much like the Hooded Crow we get here. And yea, Crows have so much more intelligence; more than most humans. :-)

  11. I like crows and ravens in general and these are very similar to ours. The heavy bill is impressive!

  12. Love the crows, Stewart, and couldn't agree more about politicians. I am really running ragged this week and may not make my post ... at least not on time. Will be following when I get the chance, however, and I see many others who seem to have more control over their lives ... hmmmm. Sounds like an exciting time at your house ... enjoy!

  13. Interesting house crows, different to our all black ones

  14. They look a bit like Hooded Crows. from Findlay

  15. Their a lot prettier than our Black Crows by a long shot.

    Great shots, Stewart.

    Thanks for hosting WBW.

  16. Great photos of the crows. I know they are clever but I don't feel happy with them at present. The other day there was a lot of noise going on in the tree next door and I saw the "peewees" very excited and upset while a big crow sat calmly in the top of the tree with a small pink baby bird hanging out of its beak.

  17. Hi Stewart, I totally agree about the politicians. I am only use to seeing the American Crows. Great shots! Thanks for sharing. Have a wonderful week ahead.

  18. Crows are so cool. :-) my husband had one as "a pet" when he was a kid.

I have never seen a crow like that!

  19. Doesn't take much to be more intelligent than the average politician. Wait, did I say that out loud... :)
Our crows are all black and noisy and they chase the hawks.
I like the iridescent colors on yours. Congrats on another lifer!

Holidays are indeed hectic but enjoy them just the same.

  21. They do indeed look much like our American Crow, and apparently display the same intelligence.
Have a good week, not too hectic at least.

  22. Great shots Stewart. They are so different to European or Australian crows and ravens but seem to have the same raised intelligence.

PS I'd love to see you in a tu tu, now that would really be a lifer for me!

  28. The black head is quite striking really. All the best ballet etc.

  29. I tend to associate crows with being more urban creatures here - rather than seeing them at the water's edge. The ones in my garden look pretty sinister - although are probably more intelligent than some politicians...

  30. I think it's the same species I saw in India Stewart. there they really are house crows! You're dead right about the politicians too - many of them remind me of other four-legged animals with curly tails though.

  31. Rather handsome crows... You should be "crowing" about the quality of your captures :)

  32. Great shots of yet another new bird! Something to ... well... "crow" about. :)
